Did you know that an average person spends one-third of their life in bed?

So – even though mattresses are expensive – purchasing one that is comfortable and works for you is a no-brainer.

But then, what happens when it’s time to make room for a new one, and you have to get rid of your current mattress?

That’s a question that’s a bit tricky to answer. Mattresses are big, heavy and terribly difficult to move – plus, your local council will not be able to pick them up curbside.

Well, don’t worry; you have a few options available to help you solve this issue.

Recycle

Each year, almost 300,000 mattresses are sent to landfills in New Zealand. Shocking, isn’t it?

Well, that’s because, in the past, there were no official options to recycle mattresses in the country.

One of the reasons for this is the method of recycling mattresses. Unlike recycling paper and other daily-use items, the process of recycling a mattress is a little tricky. The mattress must be taken apart, and this requires a lot of time and energy on your local council’s part.

Depending on the type of mattress, various materials are used in the manufacturing process.

For instance,

  • Wood, metal or plastic springs
  • Foam type
  • Padding,
  • If it has an attached mattress topper,
  • The fabric used to cover the mattress,
  • Additional embellishments (if any).

Auckland Council Schemes

However, in recent times, the Auckland Council has helped fund the establishment of a mattress recycling scheme through its Waste Minimisation Innovation Fund (WMIF).

With this scheme, consumers and businesses can drop off their mattresses at any Auckland Council Resource Recovery Centres and transfer stations free of charge.

These centres will dismantle the mattresses into raw materials, like steel, foam, plastic and fabric, which are either recycled or reused.

The only downside to this is that you will probably need to bring in your mattresses yourself. Since they’re difficult to handle, you may need to get some friends or family to help you out.

Donate

If you want to get rid of your mattresses but you cannot transport them to a recycling centre, you can always donate them to charities or organisations that need them and let your mattress be used by someone who needs it.

However, before donating it, you must first check your mattress’s condition.

In Good Condition

If your mattress still feels comfortable and has no broken springs, mould, bed bugs, ripped fabric and so on, then it’s in good condition.

Plenty of charities would welcome these donations. Some organisations may be able to arrange a pick-up from your home, but normally, they would require you to bring it to them.

Any organisation that accepts donations in kind will usually complete a thorough check on the items to make sure that they are in good condition.

And if you can’t find a charity that needs your mattress at the time, you can also check in with your friends and family to see if they – or anyone they know – might need a mattress.

In An Unusable Condition

If you haven’t been keeping up with your routine mattress cleaning and maintenance activities, you might be in for a surprise.

When any kind of moisture begins setting into the fibres of mattresses, there is usually a rapid growth of mould. This growth of mould, combined with general dust and wear and tear of the mattress fibres, can also be the perfect environment for bedbugs. These pests cause harm to you but cause an equal amount of damage to your mattress too.

Aside from these issues, if your mattress is stained and feels like the springs are completely worn out – and you wouldn’t want to sleep on it yourself – then it will most likely not be accepted by any charities.

In this event, unless your mattress has salvageable parts, it will probably end up in a landfill.

So, before you contact the donation centre, ensure that your mattress is free of;

  • Stains,
  • Infestations,
  • Odours,
  • Noisy or broken springs,
  • Structural issues,
  • Torn and very worn-out fabric,
  • Lumpy and uncomfortable padding.
