Have you noticed how difficult it is to remove sticky residue that attracts dust and dirt on your kitchen cabinet door or that gluey area on your tabletop?

It almost seems like the more you try to remove the sticky residue, the more dirt it collects and the stickier it gets!

The good news is that getting rid of it is actually pretty easy! Follow our tips to remove the sticky residue from surfaces in your home.

How to Remove Sticky Residue

Unlike most other types of grime – sticky residues need a whole different approach.

Maybe your child was playing around with stickers and glue – or there was an unfortunate adhesive spill on some of your wooden furniture or floor.

No matter the reason, you should use tools and a technique that will not damage the surface – but will remove the stain for good.

Step 1: The Prep Work

Set the stage by preparing the materials you will need:

Once this is done, utilise a stronger remedy to finish the job.

To remove sticky residue, gather up;

  • Dishwashing liquid
  • Hot water
  • Clean and dry sponge
  • Large bowl

1. Create The Cleaning Solution

Hot water softens the adhesive and helps it separate from the surface. Fill a bowl with hot – not scalding – water and add a couple of drops of dishwashing liquid to it.

2. Spot Treat The Residue

Soak the sponge with your cleaning solution and apply gently onto the sticky spot until it softens and you’re able to wipe some of it away.

You can also use the sponge to scrub the area gently.

3. Dry The Area

Ensure you dry the area thoroughly – since leaving water on surfaces (especially wooden ones) can lead to stains and damage.

Step 2: Tackling Tough Residue

If you were able to remove the sticky residue with the steps above, then great! Your job is done.

However, if some residue remains, you might have to use another approach to remove it for good.

Remember: Always test on a small area first before using any of these remedies.

Plastic Scraper

Metal blades can scratch the surface you’re trying to save – but plastic will not! Gently use a scraper like an old credit card or a plastic knife to scrape away the debris.

Hairdryer

Aim your hair dryer at the residue, and the hot air will loosen the adhesive. Scrape or wipe to remove!

Rubbing Alcohol

Rubbing alcohol is a common ingredient in most commercial cleaning products. This is because it is safe for almost all types of surfaces and works pretty quickly.

Simply dampen a clean cloth with some rubbing alcohol and rub the residue until it lifts off!

Or, soak a clean cloth with the rubbing alcohol and lay it down flat over the affected area. Allow it to sit for a few minutes, and then rub the residue off.

Peanut Butter

An item you might already have in your pantry, peanut butter is excellent to use to remove sticky residue from glass and plastic. Simply dab some on the spot, let it sit for a few minutes, and wipe away with a clean cloth!

Olive Oil

Another pantry staple, the oil helps soften sticky residue quite quickly. Apply the oil to the residue and gently rub it with a cloth until the surface is clean!

Remember to wipe away any of the remaining oil.

White Vinegar

Soak a dry, clean cloth or paper towel in vinegar and place it over the sticky area.

Allow it to stay on the adhesive residue for around 5 minutes, then wipe it away using a clean cloth (or a plastic knife).

Remember also to wipe off any remaining vinegar.

Erasers

Simple rubber erasers are made of a material that allows them to remove pencil marks from papers, wood etc. Erasers can also quickly remove sticker residue (though this method isn’t effective for tough residue).

Use the eraser over the affected area the same way as you would on the pencil marks and watch the remnants of the adhesive turn into little balls and roll away!

Shaving Foam

Shaving foam is mild enough to use on most surfaces; after all, it’s gentle enough for use on our skin.

Here’s how you can use it to get rid of those pesky adhesive residues.

  1. First, apply the shaving foam to the area that needs cleaning.
  2. This part might seem tricky – but allow the foam to sit on the residue until the area is completely damp.
  3. Next, scrape or rub the residue off the surface using a plastic knife or a clean cloth.
  4. Finally, clean the area with a mild liquid detergent, sanitising wipe or even a mild soap and water mixture.

Mayonnaise

Yes, mayonnaise! The oils in this condiment help loosen up the adhesive, allowing for quick and simple removal.

Nail Polish Remover

Acetone works quickly and efficiently on adhesive residue. All you need to do is first apply a little nail polish remover to a cotton ball. Then rub over the residue and wipe with a dry cloth.

Caution: Acetone can change the colour of wood varnishes and damage some plastics, so be careful while using it.

Do’s and Don’ts

Here are some handy points to remember when removing sticky residue from any surface.

  • Do: Peel stickers off carefully.
  • Do: Patch test before trying out any new solution.
  • Dont: Use too much heat.
  • Dont: Use metal blades to scrape the residue off any surface.
  • Don’t use wire sponges on any surface as it could cause some serious damage.

When To Hire The Pros

While, for the most part, you will be able to remove sticky residue on your own, sometimes you might need the help of a house cleaning service. For instance, if you find this adhesive residue on something that is antique, delicate, fragile, or simply an expensive item – you might not want to handle it yourself.

This way, you’ll know that the icky gunk is removed and that your precious item stays safe and sound!
